I have created a comprehensive video about the LEMCO Fleex Hotel TV system. In the video, I present the features of the Fleex Hotel TV middleware, which is part of the LEMCO ProLine and LEMCO Compact Line headend systems. I explain the operation of the system in detail and showcase its configuration possibilities step by step, guiding viewers through the full range of capabilities the platform offers.

Before diving into the system itself, I would first like to demonstrate what requirements a modern Hotel TV system should meet. To better understand this, we consulted hotel TV operators, who summarized their most important expectations regarding Hotel TV systems in seven key points.

The most important expectations of Hotel TV operators

1. Reliability and stability
Ideally, the system should operate without failures, and if an issue does occur, it should be resolved as quickly as possible.

2. User-friendly interface
This refers both to the guest experience — what hotel guests see on the screen and how easily they can navigate the menus — and to the hotel staff, who must manage the system and its administration interface as efficiently and simply as possible.

3. Integration possibilities with other systems
Primarily, this refers to integration with PMS or hotel management systems, but it also includes integrations with fire alarm systems and various smart devices.

4. Security and data protection
Hotel operators want peace of mind knowing that guest data is secure and that their systems are protected against cyber threats.

5. Wide range of content
Although not exclusively a Hotel TV function, operators expect a broad channel selection tailored to guest preferences. This also includes access to streaming services, which today are becoming increasingly important — almost essential.

6. Cost efficiency
There is little explanation needed here: the investment should be as affordable as possible, while operational costs should remain low and predictable.

7. Support for marketing and sales
Hotels want the ability to display their own promotional and informational content directly on the Hotel TV system. Management should be able to communicate promotions, offers, and internal information to guests through the television platform.

There is a fairy-tale castle hotel in Lillafüred. I had visited it years ago, and even then I was enchanted by the picturesque landscape and the sights. As a specialist working in HotelTV marketing, it was a great honor for me to collaborate with such a hospitality venue rich in services.

There are projects where, due to local conditions, it is simply not possible to extensively expand the service content. The Hotel Palota is not one of those. There are countless programs and things to discover — from Lake Hámori Lake, to the chairlift, to the Szeleta Observatory — not to mention the hotel’s own services.

Smart channel design – how we started building HotelVision

When I first reviewed their materials — the brand book, their own photos and videos, the website structure — I had the feeling that this hotel is not simply offering services. It is building a world. Wellness, restaurant, events, programs, historical environment. There was plenty of content. And that made the task both exciting and challenging.

Because a hotel information system doesn’t work just by adding a lot of content. It works by structuring it properly. It must be designed in a way that keeps the viewer’s attention for as long as possible, while delivering as much relevant information as possible.

When we design a HotelVision channel, we always start from what the hotel already knows about itself. We don’t want to impose a template. We don’t want to simply produce “nice slides.” The question is rather what internal logic the hotel operates on, and how that logic can be reflected on the in-room TV screen. What is most important, and what is most attractive for the guests.

A custom information TV channel tailored to the hotel’s identity

At Hotel Palota, the brand identity was strong: clean, elegant, and distinctive. This world had to be translated into a platform that is both an information channel and a visual experience. In many hotels, the in-room TV can feel like a separate universe with different colors, different moods, and a different tone. Here, however, it was essential that when guests turn on the TV, they do not feel they have left the hotel’s world. The screen becomes a continuation of the brand.

The real challenge, however, was not the design but the structure. With such a diverse range of services, it is easy to over-explain things. It is easy to feel that everything is equally important. But guests don’t think that way. They think in decision-making moments: Do I want to relax? Am I looking for an activity? Am I heading to dinner? The channel has to adapt to these moments.

We often took a step back and asked ourselves: does this actually help the guest make a decision, or is it just information? The difference may seem small, but in reality, it determines whether a smart channel becomes a living system or just background noise.

HotelTV marketing tailored to individual needs

Another important aspect of the project was ensuring that the hotel could later work with the system independently. Not everyone wants external support for every small update. HotelVision is cloud-based, so the team at Hotel Palota can, if they wish, modify slides themselves, create seasonal offers, or update programs. They also have access to training videos on the YouTube channel of P-SAT Hungary Kft., making the system not a closed box, but a real marketing tool in their hands.

The in-house information TV channel created at Hotel Palota ultimately became powerful not because it can display a lot of content, but because it consistently represents the same world that the hotel delivers in physical space. Video, text, and visual materials are all aligned with this. Guests may not be able to articulate why the experience feels so cohesive — but they feel it.

And perhaps that is the most fascinating part of this work: when the screen is no longer a separate element, but part of the hotel’s story.

A new wing was recently added to a renowned private clinic in Budapest: modern patient rooms, operating theatres, diagnostic facilities — everything high-tech, polished, and state of the art.

Except for the TV system. Because that didn’t work.

In the old wing, television channels were provided by One Hungary through a traditional coaxial network. But during the planning of the new building, someone assumed that by 2025 “everything runs over UTP anyway,” so only FTP cabling was installed for the TVs — no coaxial cabling at all. The project was completed exactly according to those plans: walls finished, painted, everything ready for handover.

Then came the moment when the provider’s technicians arrived to connect the TV signal in the new wing. That’s when the hidden problem exploded. Their answer was simple: “We deliver the signal over coax. If there’s no coax, there’s no signal.” That was the classic stomach-dropping moment for the client. Re-cabling the entire wing with coaxial wiring simply wasn’t an option. This was a fully operating clinic, where opening walls again would have seriously disrupted day-to-day medical operations.

We also accounted for attenuation: FTP cabling has slightly higher losses than coaxial cable, but this can easily be compensated with a high-quality antenna amplifier. The signal was injected into the FTP network, and at the endpoints it was converted back to RF using COE balun adapters, then connected to the TVs’ antenna inputs. And that’s when the “magic” happened — or rather, the expected professional result. The service provider’s technicians initially looked at the system with some skepticism, but once they saw a perfectly stable signal even at the furthest endpoint, their feedback changed noticeably — and so did the atmosphere.

A few months ago, we received an inquiry from the manager of a prestigious four-star hotel. You could hear it in his voice: he wasn’t just looking for information — he needed a real solution.
“Our guests constantly complain about the TVs, and my staff are slowly burning out from spending half their workday helping guests turn the TVs on.”

Then came the on-site survey. The building itself was beautiful and modern, everything looked fine from the outside. The antennas, headend system, and structured network were professionally built, the installation was exemplary. The nightmare began once we entered the guest room: the TV simply wouldn’t turn on.

The hotel was using an IPTV system with set-top boxes. Remote in hand, press the ON button — nothing. Again, harder — still nothing. Phone support from maintenance finally explained the trick: you had to hold the power button for 10 seconds while pointing the remote behind the TV so the IR sensor could “catch” the signal. At that moment, I fully understood the manager’s concern.

Then came the menu system. Slow, confusing, and half the channels were missing. The system had been installed 11 years ago using what was then considered state-of-the-art IPTV technology: UTP cabling, consumer-grade televisions, and IPTV set-top boxes in every room. But time had caught up with the boxes — they had become slow, the remotes needed replacement, and the guests were understandably dissatisfied.

And not only the guests. According to the manager, the hotel staff were spending 4–5 hours every day dealing with TV-related issues. At that point, it was no longer an inconvenience — it had become an operational problem.

Trying to solve the issue themselves without consulting a specialist, the hotel purchased 110 new consumer TVs. What they didn’t realize was that the real problem wasn’t the televisions — it was the outdated set-top boxes. Unsurprisingly, nothing changed except that the TVs looked newer.

That’s when we got involved. We presented the manager with two possible solutions:

1. Migration to a complete HotelTV system.
   A modern solution with IPTV-capable, centrally managed televisions. However, this would have required purchasing another full set of TVs and represented a significant investment — something the hotel understandably did not want to undertake only a few months after buying 110 new televisions.
2. COE solution (Coax Over Ethernet).
   We kept the existing UTP cabling infrastructure in place, but created coax distribution inside the floor rack cabinets with proper signal amplification. The signal was then patched through using COE cables. The set-top boxes were completely removed from the rooms, and the televisions were connected directly using the COE cabling solution.

The manager ultimately chose the second option — the COE solution. He realistically recognized that it offered the best balance between cost and practical results.

Implementation of the COE solution

The old headend system was replaced with a new hybrid model capable of delivering signals simultaneously over coax and IP. This also ensures an easy transition back to IPTV in the future if the televisions are later upgraded. Floor by floor, signal amplifiers and RF splitters were installed together with the COE cabling infrastructure. The set-top boxes were completely removed from the guest rooms.

Using COE adapters, the TVs were connected directly through their RF inputs, allowing guests to use the televisions just like they would at home.

The result

With the new system:

• the number of available TV channels was doubled.
• the hotel’s maintenance staff finally got relief, and the daily TV-related interventions disappeared.
• everything now works perfectly with a single remote control.
• as an added benefit, the hotel also received its own HotelTV information channel displaying custom hotel marketing and informational content.

And what did it cost?

Almost exactly the same as purchasing 110 new IPTV boxes — except this investment delivered an outstanding guest experience instead of just replacing outdated hardware.

After the phone, the TV remote control is probably the device we pick up most often. British scientists have not yet studied this, but we can imagine how much dirt and germs can lurk between the buttons.

And if you pick up a remote control in a hotel or God forbid, a hospital, you have no idea who touched it before you. This is a particularly sensitive issue at the times of hot, humid weather.

What can we do?
We can give up watching TV or wrap the remote in a tissue. One thing’s for sure, we can’t clean it under the tap.

The terraces open like mushrooms and compete for the favour of the guests. In many places, it’s standard to have one or more TV sets outside, showing current sporting events or video clips.
